Press Release February 2010

Press Release

Alexander (Sandy) J. Mitchell MBE, founder of WindReach Farm, is pleased to announce the appointment of Penny Smith as interim Executive Director. Penny has a long history of community service in Durham region; in particular working with and serving individuals with special needs of all ages and abilities. From 1997 to 2008 Penny was the Executive Director of WindReach Farm. She left to pursue other opportunities and is returning to assist with strengthening our service to those in our community who have the greatest need for our programs and activities. After celebrating our 20th anniversary in 2009, our theme for 2010 is Re-connecting with our Roots. This will include a series of focus groups with our volunteers, visitors and participants, including individuals in group homes, schools, seniors residences, and with other community organizations. The results of the focus groups will be used to revitalize our programs for those who have come to rely on WindReach Farm for recreation, education, work experience and community service.

Mr. Mitchell would also like to take this opportunity to thank all past and current board members, volunteers and donors for their support and dedication to WindReach Farm over the past 20 years. WindReach Farm, a registered charity, is a fully wheelchair accessible, working farm in Ashburn, Ontario.  For the past twenty years, WindReach Farm has welcomed up to 20,000 visitors with physical and/or intellectual disabilities of all ages annually and continues to work with nearly 350 community organizations, including group homes, hospitals, schools and senior’s residences.   Since 1989 we have offered three main programs: Visitor’s, Work Experience and Accommodation programs.  With the development of a purpose-built fully accessible equestrian centre, WindReach Farm now offers a Therapeutic Riding Program. The equestrian centre is also used to host local, regional, national and international para-equestrian events.   On May 28th, 2010 the WindReach International Para-Dressage (www.cpedi3.ca/) will be held at WindReach Farm and we are looking forward to welcoming riders with physical disabilities from up to 10 countries.   For more information about WindReach Farm, please visit us at www.windreachfarm.org
