Animal Care Assistant - High School Student

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Assist with feeding, watering, grooming, cleaning and exercising the animals and learning the steps to ensure the overall health and well-being of all the farm animals;

  • Participate in the full circle of life care of our animals including assisting with births, treatments and deaths of our animals when necessary;

  • Assist with the raising and training of young animals and becoming comfortable with a variety of farm animals while preparing them for their role of being handled safely by people of all ages and abilities;

  • Understand all aspects of safe animal handling including having respect for the mother-offspring relationships;

  • Learn several animal training techniques, while establishing confidence and independence and enjoying the animal handling experiences;

  • Involved in farm materials handling including: hay, grain, straw, shavings, manure and compost;

  • Required to work with people (children, youth and adults) with special needs and encourage and oversee safe animal interaction, feeding and general care;

  • Ability to communicate efficiently and professionally with supervisor, other animal care workers, volunteers and individuals with special needs in our Community Participation Program. Collaboration may happen with some of these people on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, depending on the interaction;

  • Daily communication with the farmer, in order to assist with day-to-day care of farm animals (sheep, goats, cattle, donkeys, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs), and other farm related duties as required;

  • Help with supervision and guidance of animal care volunteers;

  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions (written and oral) from farmer.
